What has happened to the Jamaican Diaspora movement? Dear Sir: What has happened to the Jamaica Diaspora movement here in Florida? Earlier this year there was so much news about the Diaspora this and the Diaspora that. But, over the past few months I haven’t heard a thing. This is a shame since there are so many Jamaicans living in Florida, especially in South Florida, Tampa and up here in Orlando. I recently visited Toronto, Canada and the Diaspora movement there is really on the ball. Aljost weekly they have seminars and different forums discussing matters that affect Jamaica and Jamaicans in Canada. There is a big fundraising drive over there to raise funds to help the public hospitals in Jamaica. And, up in New York, the Diaspora representatives are working very closely with the Jamaican Consulate to get information out to Jamaicans, and generally have a strong link with the wide Jamaican community, but I hear of nothing going on down here in Florida. As an old Jamaican civil servant I believe in performance and commitment. If the people responsible for organizing the Diaspora here in Florida made commitments to serve the Diaspora then they are very irresponsible, because there is no indication of them doing anything that I know of. Too much money being spent on elections Dear Sir: I just heard on the TV that something close to $2 billion was spent on the recent mid-term elections, and that Mr. Charlie Crist had the jost expensive campaign spending over $50 million. Mr. Editor, this is ridiculous. These candidates are not really campaigning and trying to convince us that we should vote for them; instead they are busy buying votes. My word, sir! Do you know how far $2 billion could go to assist people with problems in this country? The same big companies and rich people who are making these contributions would make a big stink if they are asked to pay more takes so that there are shelters built for the homeless, or start a national healthcare program. But they have no qualms in doling out millions to crafty politicians. Mr. Editor I am asking you to start a campaign to lobby for both a Florida and federal constitutional amendment that put a cap on the money that candidates can raise in the different type of elections. Two billion dollars, sir? I can’t believe it. Dr. Peter Bailey, Lantana
