The management of the cash-strapped national airline, Air Jamaica, has told workers that there would be no redundancies as it seeks to implement plans to re-organize the airline. The assurance was given during a meeting on Monday between the company and the unions representing the nearly 2,000 employees. The Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU), the National Workers Union (NWU), the Union of Clerical, Administrative and Supervisory employees (UCASE), the Jamaica Airline Pilots Association and the group representing flight attendants, had requested the meeting amid reports that a recently drafted restructuring plan would include several job cuts. BITU Assistant General Secretary Kavon Gayle said Air Jamaica's management team gave a guarantee that the current work force would not be affected during the re-organization phase. "Based on the discussions our members had some serious concerns as it relates to the impending restructuring, what we have been advised that any restructuring that is about to come will not affect the staff in their loosing their jobs, we were given that guarantee," he said. Two weeks ago, the Portia Simpson Miller administration rejected a new business plan presented by the company. The government has since advised the company to focus on downsizing some areas and eliminating unprofitable routes.
