A seven-member delegation from China has arrived there to begin work on the first phase of a Chinese housing project.

A Grenada government statement said that during phase one of the program, the Chinese would construct 536 houses for persons in the vulnerable group across the country. It said that the Chinese would construct a total of 2,000 houses for the people of Grenada.

During their three-week stay, the delegation will conduct surveys and all the technical assessments required for the project, the statement said.

In addition, the project will cater also for dwelling houses to be constructed on private lands for persons who were affected by Hurricanes Ivan and Emily, the statement said, noting, "It is estimated that approximately 500 families will fall into this category.”

Housing Minister Yolande Bain Horsford said the Keith Mitchell administration is committed to providing housing for the persons affected by the two hurricanes.

She said China has been good to Grenada and their relationship is blossoming, citing that the Chinese were delivering on many projects promised to Grenada.
