Broaden the entertainment at Jamaica Jerk Festival Dear Sir: Hope many of your readers got a chance to go to the recent Jamaica Jerk Festival. It was really a good outing for the family. However, I still think that it could be better. This is one of the rare events in the Caribbean community that is fit for the entire family, but I would like it to be much more like a carnival. Remember the country fairs that were held in Jamaica on times like Boxing Day, and First of August. At these fairs they had entertainment like Ferris wheel; merry-go-round; donkey and horse ride, maypole dances, and assorted games of chance. I would like to see these introduce to the Jerk Festival, it would give it such a unique Jamaican atjosphere, and provide a broader variety of entertainment than what now exists. No one would want to leave the festival, and the vendors would sell much more food. I hope the planners of the event give some thought to this. Jimmy Francis, Miami
Poor effort by Florida’s Child Supporting Agency Dear Sir: More serious work needs to be done at Florida’s “Child Support Enforcement Agency.” A lot is desired here, regarding the role it ought to play in assisting those who need it. For example, if a woman gets pregnant and seeks the agency support in finding the man responsible, sometimes after six months after submitting the relevant information about the man, the woman is told, “sorry we cannot locate him.” This, despite the fact that the woman know for a fact where the man can be located. All the agency does is sit on the information. Sometimes agency workers have the audacity to tell the women that they are not “private eyes.” In other states, once information is provided the Child Support Enforcement agency finds the “Dad” In short time. Florida holds it’s own when it comes to deporting non-immigrants, but fails to help the less fortunate get assistance. There are so many disgruntled Moms who feel totally hopeless in getting help from Florida’s Child Enforcement Support Agency. Their men have gone, leaving them to the mercy of the state, but the state shows no mercy. It could happen only in Florida. So, men please provide for your children. It’s the manly thing to do. M.
