If you
mention the name Percy Sledge to just about any music fan in the world, you'll
invariably elicit a woebegone version of "When A Man Loves A Woman."
That song is Percy's signature hit and a tune that defined the summer of 1966
and every one thereafter. Percy Sledge can boast a number of significant chart
hits including "Take Time To Know Her," "Warm And Tender
Love," "Out Of Left Field, "It Tears Me Up," and "I'll
Be Your Everything. His successful career is now in its fifth decade.
The soul
balladeer, who was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005, started
out in the group, Esquire Combos and later went solo with his signature ballad
“When A Man Loves A Woman”. His last Album “Shining Through the Rain” came
after a long hiatus from the music and Percy had this to say about the album: "I
have to be honest with you; I just really like the album. When I first listened
to the finished version, I couldn't help but cry." With a title like “Shining
Through The Rain”, you just know that Percy's initial reaction upon hearing the
finished product was prophetic.

Not too little too late for JOJO |

The sound
of this 16 year-old belting out “Too Little Too Late”, is nothing but good
music to the ears. Joanna ‘Jojo’ Levesque is at a high with not just her pretty
face, but her beautiful voice, her poise, songwriting and acting.
Born
December 20, 1990 to a singing family (father Joel, a blues singer and mother
Diana a choir singer) in Brattleboro, Vermont and raised in Foxborough,
Massachusetts, this young woman brings to the table a bit of class in a sea of
trashy flesh baring gyrating young women.
Being of
Native American, Irish, Polish, and French ancestry, may had added to her
eclectic style. Though steeped in R&B and pop, Jojo’s appeal is far
reaching.

The Rock the World Concert decided to rock Spragga
Benz’s pocket? According to the promoters, Pulse Investments Limited, Spragga
breached a clause in his contract when he used profanity on the stage, so they held
back 25 percent of his fees. In the clause it was clearly stated that no artiste was to
use any “expletive, profane or indecent language during his performance” or the
will not be fully compensated. Apparently, Spragga did the opposite of that,
and instead of the 50% balance that was owed to him, they only gave him half of
it. The booking agents, Headline Entertainment, did not know of the promoter’s
decision and promised to give a full report to the news after it has been
investigated. Spragga said that he doesn’t remember the songs that he performed
because when he is on stage he is in a different world. The event, which was
held at the One Love Jamaica Village, in New Kingston on Sunday March 18 with
other performers such as Buju Banton, Tanya Stephens, Tessanne Chin, Richie
Spice, Beenie Man, Ninja Man, Shaggy and more…was an excellent production only
to be marred by Spragga’s behavior. What I can’t believe is Ninja Man and Beenie
Man did not use expletives. Pulse must have been real strict with this clause
in their contract which is actually a Jamaican law.

World Cup
Cricket is in full gear and this gives me a chance to reflect on the music that
makes mention of the game of cricket. Given the great job the West Indies
Cricket team did earlier this week (or so I’m told over and over by all my
cricket-loving friends), I’ve given more thought to the game and the music
which has been the basis of many songs. Personally,
I’m no big sports fan, but I’m intrigued by the number of people that events
such as World Cup, can draw. Trinidad probably has some of the more memorable songs as
their player, Brian Lara, has accomplished so much and become a world-renowned
cricketer. Superblue’s ever popular,
“Signal to Lara,” remains a favorite among any song he’s ever done. So popular
was the song, it won the 1995 Road March title in Trinidad
that year.
