Black actors have done it again!
The voluptuous, vivacious songstress Jennifer
Hudson and the talented Forest Whitaker snagged the best supporting actress and
best actor Oscars respectively last Sunday at the Academy Awards. Longtime
comedian, Eddie Murphy lost what would
have been his first Oscar (for best supporting actor) to Alan Arkin of
"Little Miss Sunshine". Hudson, a veritable newby to the acting world
and a American Idol reject beat out Oscar favorite Cate Blanchett for
"Notes on a Scandal" and the cute "Little Miss Sunshine
herself," Abigail Breslin. Hudson, along with Beyonce and the third of
their trio, co-star Anika Noni Rose, gave an effortlessly perfect performance
of three songs from "Dreamgirls" that were nominated for best Original
Song, but lost. Forest Whitaker, who was able to grab his golden man for best
actor, unlike at the Golden Globes, was prepared with a written
speech. Whitaker's speech ended a memorable evening with these perfect
words, "It's possible." You are right, “with black all things are
possible”.

When you
hear the first few lines from his celebrated single “Come Around” you start
wondering: which Jamaican is that? How come I never heard him before? He is a convincing
reggae artiste, both in content and sound, so when the speakers are blaring and
you hear, “Finally the herbs come around, the high grade weh mi a look fa mi
get it by the pound” you immediately think, ‘I like this song.’

Trinidad
Carnival has come to an end and it was probably the best start Machel Montano
could have for his 25th anniversary in the business. Machel copped the Road March title last week
leaving his competitors far behind. The
song that is played the most among the various judging points on the road wins
the coveted Road March title, and it was no surprise by Carnival Monday who
would win. “Jumbie,” had an astonishing
388 plays, versus Shurwayne Winchester’s, “Open De Gate,” at a mere 34 plays. The
rhythm and pan in, “Jumbie,” was an ideal tune for the road. The song didn’t need a roadmix to compliment
the song for the road. Over the last
four years or so, DJ’s looked forward to the roadmixes for songs, but this was
one year where many wondered what could possibly be done to make the song
better. In one word, “nothing.”

For those of you who have
seen Jamaican singing sensation Nadine Sutherland perform in South
Florida recently, you know she’s still got it. In fact, the
artiste has just wrapped shooting on the music video for her newest hit single
“Big TingZ”
from her upcoming album Call My Name on Eight76 Records. The upbeat single was
released to radio earlier this month, and has quickly become a staple at reggae
radio in South Florida and is picking up steam all over the Caribbean.
