ICM Fest good show and no-show PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 23 November 2008
Hooded jackets, leather jackets and boots aren’t the usual attire for a party by the beach, but for the patrons who took the long trek to Virginia Key Beach Park in Miami for the ICM Fest it was the best way to keep warm.

With temperatures dipping to a low of about 55 degrees, the entertainers for the night had the job of keeping the crowd warm by heating up the stage.

The National Weekly arrived just in time to catch the powerful voice and vibe of the petite warrior Queen Ifrica, who lashed the crowd into a frenzy with her socially conscious lyrics and DJ prowess. The Queen ruled the stage, and she trod barefooted in khaki pants, and a militant black shirt over her tank top and matching head wrap. Drawing for the tune Nuh Rub, she assured the crowd that beauty went beyond skin color. She tackled the surge of crime against women and children in Jamaica and urged women to keep the men in the bedroom so they don’t make trouble in the streets.

It wasn’t long before she launched into her first big hit, Below The Waist, after singing about Randy and for the finale, she sang the very appropriate mega hit, Daddy.

The event of the year! PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 17 November 2008
It didn’t rain this year. And, I’m sure those there who attended last year’s Jamaican Jerk Festival at Markham Park in Sunrise were all saying halleluiah!

The year’s event, which attracted an estimated 18,000 patrons, was another titillating exhibition and celebration of Jamaican art, craft, food and culture, taking Jamaican nationals home and immersing others into their vibrant lifestyle.

Patrons floated in on the mingling aromas of all things ‘Jerk’ and were taken away by the sheer magnitude and variety of the “Biggest Caribbean Food Festival in the USA”. There was something for everyone, from soccer and netball matches and domino tournaments to celebrity chefs’ cook-off competitions, cultural stages and expanded Kids’ Zone.

The recent change in the White House is proving to be contagious, and now the planet has taken on an “Obama frenzy”. That said, it was no surprise that the ICM Fest scheduled for November 16th has also made a change and will now be dubbed OBAMA FEST.

"The energy that this historic occasion has showered over the entire country, has affected our lives in all forms", said an elated Delroy Escoffery, promoter of the event. "The way we live, the way we think and right now, the way we celebrate and entertain ourselves have been affected. So it was only right that we continued to be a part of this movement and re-brand the event OBAMA FEST to further uplift the vibe and overall atmosphere of this celebration," he continued.
