DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – Shivnarine Chanderpaul has displaced Sri
Lankan wicketkeeper batsman Kumar Sangakkara as leading batsman on the
ICC Test Player Rankings.
This is Chanderpaul’s first time at the top of the batting rankings
after 112 Test matches, and he is the only West Indian batsman in the
Top 20.
He averaged 91 in the recently concluded Test series between Australia,
South Africa, and Sri Lanka being the model of consistency in the last
12 months, but ending up on the losing side in five out of eight Tests.

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent– Jamaica, on the back of another sparkling
performance by inspirational captain Simone Forbes, ran away with the
Americas Federation of Netball Association’s title with a comfortable
53-32 victory over Trinidad & Tobago last Friday.
The Sunshine Girls were comfortable winners in what was expected to be
a close encounter, but never materialized in front of an appreciative
crowd as the Jamaicans led all quarters, 18-7 after the first period,
28-16 at halftime, and 42-25 after three periods.
“We set ourselves the goal of beating all the teams by at least 20
goals so as not to become complacent – we wanted to be convincing
winners since we are ranked in the top three in the World,” Forbes in
her debut appearance as captain told the CMC Sportswire.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – Keyeno Thomas and Cornell Glen struck
second-half goals to propel Trinidad and Tobago to a 2-0 win over
reigning Digicel Caribbean champions Haiti 2-0 in their friendly
football international on Wednesday .
Thomas and Glen struck headed goals eight minutes apart to sink the Haitians, who were late stand-in opponents.
Haiti, the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) 2007 Team of the Year, were
named last weekend as replacement for Panama, the original opponents.

CASTRIES, St. Lucia – Former Guyana captain and West Indies off-spin bowler Clyde Butts has been promoted to become the new convenor of the West Indies selection panel, the West Indies Cricket Board announced last Saturday.
Butts, former Trinidad & Tobago and West Indies spin bowler Raphick Jumadeen, and former Jamaica captain and West Indies off-spin bowler Robert Haynes will compose the new selection panel.
Cricket’s regional governing body has also indicated that Sagicor, a major Caribbean financial services provider, has agreed in principle to support the High Performance Centre of the Academy.

Powell puts the world on notice |

STOCKHOLM, Sweden– Asafa Powell used a tremendous start to beat fellow
Jamaican Usain Bolt in the highly anticipated men’s 100 meters at the
IAAF DN Galan Super Grand Prix track and field meeting on Tuesday
evening to put the world on notice ahead of the Beijing Olympics.
Powell clocked 9.88 seconds, edging world-record holder Bolt (9.89), with Norway’s Jaysuma Ndure (10.06) third.
“I was really happy with the race, my goal was to win,” Powell told reporters after the race.
Trinidad and Tobago’s Richard Thompson was fourth in 10.06 in a quality
field that featured several top contenders for the Olympics next month.
