Monday, 18 August 2008 |
BEIJING, China – Jamaican swimmer Alia Atkinson has called for an
enhanced swimming program for the Caribbean, following her failed
campaign in the 200 meters breaststroke at the 29th Olympiad here.
She recorded a personal best, clocking 2:29.33 minutes but could not advance from the opening round of the event on Wednesday.
“More clinics, more training trips abroad are needed for Caribbean
swimmers to advance and compete at this level,” the 20-year old told
CMC Sports.
Atkinson said despite her dominance at competitions in the Caribbean, it took something special to excel at international level.

Monday, 18 August 2008 |
Jamaica’s young Reggae Girls and Cuba upset Trinidad & Tobago in
two finals to leave the hosts empty handed at the Marvin Lee Stadium
last Sunday.
In the evening’s first match, Jamaica beat T&T 3-2 to lift the
Caribbean Football Union Girls Invitational Championship title while in
the second fixture, Cuba beat the T&T lads 2-1 in the final of the
CFU Youth Cup.
The girls’ final brought together the two most consistent teams in the
seven-team tournament and it was showing on the field as they went in
search of the opening goal.
Just when it seemed as though both teams would go to the break with
empty scoresheets, Jamaica took the lead with virtually the last kick
of the first half through Shenika Williams.

Monday, 18 August 2008 |
Guyanese Leon Johnson and the Australia-born Jamaican all-rounder
Brendan Nash are the only new faces in a 14-man West Indies squad named
for the Tri-Nation series in Canada next week and the ICC Champions
trophy in Pakistan next month.
Clyde Butts, chairman of West Indies selectors, announced Tuesday that
Chris Gayle would lead the squad for the August 16-25 tournament in
Greater Toronto before doing the same for the September 12-28 Champions
Trophy.
Barbadian fast bowler Kemar Roach has been included for his first full
tour while Jamaican wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh returns to West Indies
colors after almost two years in the wilderness.
His presence means selectors have overlooked first choice keeper Denesh
Ramdin and Barbadian Patrick Browne, who has deputized recently in
Ramdin’s absence.

Gayle has change of heart |
|
|
|
|
Monday, 18 August 2008 |
Batsman Chris Gayle has withdrawn his letter of resignation as West
Indies captain, and appears to be seeking a return to the head of the
beleaguered team, a West Indies Cricket Board source confirmed last
Friday.
In a letter dated July 22, Gayle had served notice of his decision to step down as West Indies captain with immediate effect.
His letter came after being summoned to a disciplinary meeting by chief
executive Donald Peters, but it was later revealed this had been done
without the Board’s knowledge.
