Veronica Campbell set for Reebok Grand Prix PDF Print E-mail

Jamaican sprinter Veronica Campbell, the jost successful female track athlete at the 2004 Olympics, is set to compete at the 2006 Reebok Grand Prix on June 3, organizers announced last week. Commonwealth Games sprint champions Sheri-Ann Brooks (100m) and Omar Brown (200m), Omar Brown (200 meters) also of Jamaica are among the Jamaican athletes

In Athens, Campbell won two gold medals (200m and 4x100m) and a bronze (100m) for Jamaica, and recently earned a 200m silver at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. Named the 2004 Sportswoman of the Year in Jamaica, Campbell’s winning time of 22.05 in her 200m victory in Athens was the fastest in the world for 2004, and no woman has run faster in the last five years.

The Reebok Grand Prix, the only outdoor East Coast meet that offers head-to-head competition among world-class athletes, was the first international competition held in the new Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island when it debuted last year.

 
Western holds Honduras to a 2-2 draw PDF Print E-mail

Last Wednesday’s Caribbean American Soccer Association (CASA) Super League action saw Western, who has made an impressive debut in the tournament, facing one of their toughest opponents in Honduras Five Stars.  Western came out fighting by attacking the Honduran defense, which caught them by surprise. However, Honduras striker Alberto Munoz put the ball in the back of the net in the 8th minute to put Honduras up 1-0.

This setback did not preclude Western from dominating the midfield putting together better passes and outrunning Honduras. They forced Honduras to commit a few unnecessary fouls.  Western striker Floyd Williams scored in the 23rd minute, equalizing at the half. 

 
Dwyane Wade and the leg cramps PDF Print E-mail

Dwyane Wade practiced on Monday and expected to play; Alonzo Mourning was listed as a game-time decision.

After nearly upsetting the Miami Heat in the series opener, the Bulls took another shot at a victory in Game Two of their Eastern Conference playoff series on Monday.

 

In game One, Shaquille O'Neal made 11-of-16 shots, scored 27 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and blocked five shots Saturday to give Miami a 111-106 triumph over the Bulls. The 7-1 center has won all 25 playoff series after taking the opening game. Dwyane Wade scored 14 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter, had 11 assists and made 14-of-16 free throws for the Heat. However, he was plagued by leg cramps and hobbled off the court late in the contest.

But the problem will continue to be Dwayne Wade and his cramp leg.

There's no disguising the pain. "I hope it's just a cramp," Wade said. "My muscle is still pretty tight."

 
SVG's Young drafted to WNBA PDF Print E-mail

St Vincent & the Grenadines college star Sophia Young will turn out for the San Antonio Silver Stars in the upcoming WNBA season after being drafted on Wednesday night.

The 22-year old, six-foot, one-inch forward, who had been a stand-out at Baylor University over the last two season, was the No. 4, first round pick in the draft held at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Centre.

"At first I was really nervous because I didn't know where I was going to be and now the nervousness is gone, but it was really overwhelming because it's something you look forward to since you are a little girl and now that it is finally here," Young said afterward.

 
Ames finishes 11th at Masters PDF Print E-mail

Trinidad and Tobago-born golf ace Stephen Ames carded a final round one-over 73 and ended 11th at the Masters in Augusta on Sunday evening as American Phil Mickelson snatched a two-stroke victory.

Ames, who had entered the final round joint fifth, lost ground when he bogeyed at the fourth and seventh holes.

He steadied his game on the back nine and shot a birdie at the 15th en route to a one-under 288 total, seven strokes adrift of the left-handed Mickelson, who collected US$1.26 million for his win.

It was the third major title and second green jacket for Mickelson, who was one shot clear when the weather-hit third round was completed earlier Sunday.
