BYDGOSZCZ, Poland– Jamaican Dexter Lee stunned more fancied rivals to
win the men’s 100 meters on Wednesday evening, opening the Caribbean’s
gold medal account at the 12th IAAF World Junior Championship.
Lee’s more favored teammate Yohan Blake labored into fourth place to
surprisingly miss a medal as Lee grabbed gold in 10.42 seconds.
The South African Wilhelm van der Vyver got silver in 10.42, and
American Terrell Wilks, the quickest going into the final, was third in
10.45.

World Champion Veronica Campbell-Brown shockingly missed out an
automatic 100-metre Olympic spot while Usain Bolt defeated Asafa Powell
in the clash of the world's fastest men at Jamaica's Olympic Trials on
Saturday night.
A fourth place finish for Campbell-Brown means -- based on the Jamaica
Amateur Athletic Association (JAAA) rules that state the first two
automatically qualify and the third place is discretionary – she could
find herself out of the Beijing women's 100 meters.
But Campbell-Brown would join Bolt who clocked an easy 19.97 seconds to
win the men’s 200, as she sped to a career-best and world-leading 21.94
seconds to land the women’s half-lap sprint as the meet.

Gay runs wind-assisted 9.68 at US trials |

Saturday, 05 July 2008 |
American sprint ace Tyson Gay ran a blistering 9.68 seconds to win the men’s 100 meters at the US Olympic trials last Sunday night.
The time tops Usain Bolt’s world mark of 9.72 seconds but will not be recorded as a new world mark because of a hefty following wind of 4.1 meters per second.
The 9.68 clocking also makes Gay the quickest ever all-time in any condition, topping the previous wind-assisted best of 9.69 seconds by Barbadian Obadele Thompson in Texas in April 1996.
Gay, the reigning World Champion over 100 and 200 meters, won ahead of Walter Dix (9.80), with Darvis Patton (9.84) third.

Banned sprinter Justin Gatlin took his doping appeal to the next level Wednesday, hoping he can beat the clock and make it to the starting blocks in time to compete at U.S. Track and Field's Olympic trials this weekend.
Gatlin's attorneys sent a motion by e-mail to the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta, asking that he be allowed to compete in the 100-meter races that begin Saturday in Eugene, Ore.
A similar motion was also filed with U.S. District Judge Lacey Collier in Pensacola, Fla., who ruled Tuesday that he did not have jurisdiction in a case stemming from Gatlin's doping suspension.
Officials in the Atlanta court said a decision would be expedited.
Gatlin's attorneys are asking the courts to issue an emergency injunction, pending his appeal that would allow him to participate.
USA Track and Field officials said they have made contingency plans for the defending Olympic champion to run in qualifying heats Saturday if the courts rule he can. (AP)
