Shaq Seeks Medical Treatment In L.A. PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 13 January 2008

MINNEAPOLIS (CBS4) ― Heat center Shaquille O'Neal is seeking medical treatment across the country in Los Angeles for a hip injury that has left him sidelined for the past five games, according to CBS4 News partner The Miami Herald.

O'Neal, who has missed an average of 20 games over the past six full seasons, bruised his left hip when he dove for a loose ball during a game against Utah on Dec. 22nd. He aggravated the injury two games later in Philadelphia.

Doctors told O'Neal to sit out until the hip was completely healed.

He had already been playing with pain in his right hip and surgically repaired left knee since the preseason. O'Neal had taken cortisone injections to relieve the pain in his knee and hip. He said he stopped taking the shots during his Dec. 27 doctor's visit.

O'Neal's departure two games into a five-game trip is the latest setback for an injury-plagued team that has the worst record in the Eastern Conference at 8-26 and has lost seven games in a row.

The hip injury and a sore left knee have contributed to the least productive season of O'Neal's 16-year career. He is averaging just 14 points and 7.8 rebounds in 29 games.

Injury layoffs have been common for O'Neal in recent years. He missed 39 games last season, when he underwent left knee surgery.

He sat out 21 games during the Heat's 2005-06 championship season because of a sprained ankle and sprained thumb.

The Heat lost O'Neal's backup, Alonzo Mourning, for the season when he tore two knee ligaments in a Dec. 19 loss at Atlanta.

Dwyane Wade, Jason Williams and Dorell Wright have all battled injuries recently.

Will the Phins do the unthinkable? PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 22 December 2007

Phin-ally!! The Miami Dolphins won a game at last. Miami snapped their franchise record 17-game losing streak dating back to last season, by beating the Baltimore Ravens last Sunday.

Now, the big question is: Will the surging 1-13 Dolphins go ahead and make the greatest upset in football history by defeating the undefeated New England Patriots Sunday in Foxborough, Massachusetts? The Dolphins will have destiny in their own hands, as they try to prevent New England from breaking their 1972 record as the only undefeated team in NFL history. However, the way New England is playing it seems like wishful thinking, but stranger things have happened in sports and preservation of their club record might just be enough motivation for a Dolphins team, who should play a lot looser now that they have avoided an o-for season.

At last the monkey is off Miami's back. Coach Cam Cameron finally has his first win as a Head Coach. It is a deserving victory as Cameron fought hard all season, losing several games by just three points. Miami avoided becoming the second team to go 0-14, like the `74 Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The win was a hard fought one. Dolphins Quarterback Cleo Lemon returned as starter after Rookie John Beck was benched by Head Coach Cam Cameron. Lemon played exceptionally well going 23 completions out of 39 attempts and 315 yards which included the game-winning 64 yard Touchdown pass to Greg Camarillo. His performance won him the AFC offensive player of the week award.

Is it over for Mourning? PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 22 December 2007

mourning.jpgMiami Heat, which has been having an abysmal season this year, may have suffered another setback when center Alonzo Mourning suffered what might be a season and career-ending injury to his right knee in the Heat game against Atlanta, last Wednesday.

It is believed Mourning sustained a torn patella tendon in his right knee, which could take between four to six months to heal after surgery, signaling the likely end to his 15 year career. Mourning had already said this was his final year and with the injury and the expected long recovery time, this might just be it for the Heat’s big man.

Mourning, 37, was hurt when attempting to defend the basket against a layup by Atlanta's Mario West. Replays showed his knee buckled without contact from West, as he seemed to have lost his footing in attempt to jump. He hit the floor in obvious pain, and was helped off the court after refusing to be taken off on a stretcher.

The seven time All-Star center has played 11 of his 15 seasons with the Heat in two separate stints where he returned to win a title in 2006. He missed a full year because of kidney problems which led to him getting a transplant in 2003.

Mourning is also a two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and Olympic Gold Medalist from the 2000 Games in Sydney, Australia.

Cuba out of Stanford Twenty20 Cup PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 22 December 2007

COOLIDGE, Antigua, CMC – Cuba will not be playing in the 2008 Stanford Twenty20 Cup, organisers announced on Tuesday.

Due to the United States embargo against Cuba, organisations and American citizens such as Sir Allen Stanford have to apply and receive special permission from the United States Government to conduct any type of activity with that Caribbean nation.

Much to the disappointment of Sir Allen and the West Indies legends working with him, Sir Allen’s application was denied.

"We have been anxious to include the entire Caribbean in the Stanford Twenty20 Cup, and I am extremely disappointed that Cuba will not be able to play," Sir Allen said in a news release.

"Stanford Twenty20 is requesting that the denial from the United States Government be reconsidered, and we are exploring every option to secure their future participation."

The news comes as a huge disappointment to the Cuba team as well. They have been training intensely with the help of West Indies fast bowling legend Courtney Walsh for what was to be their first official competition outside of their homeland.
