Police is becoming ineffective Dear Sir: Why isn’t your paper speaking louder and more often about the problems of gun violence in both Miami-Dade and Broward County? Each week we are losing young black teenage men and girls to crazy gun violence. It just keeps on and I am tired and sad of reading, seeing and hearing of these shootings on the news. Why isn’t the police dong more to curb these shootings, and catching those responsible? Is it because it is black youth being killed, why nothing seems to be happening? I bet if it was white youth being killed, there would be curfews all over Miami and Broward to find the guns and the killers. That’s what we want. I hope even one policeman or policewoman in both counties read this letter. But up some type of dragnet in place like Opa Locka, Miami Gardens, Liberty City, Sistrunk and Fort Lauderdale to stop and search cars, find the guns being used in all these drive-by shootings and lock up the gun men. Don’t tell me the police have become so soft in dealing with gun violence. We need action. Karl Nicolas, Miami |

Jamaicans overseas should be honored too Dear Sir: I noticed that last week during Jamaica’s Independence celebrations, a long list of awards was announced honoring Jamaicans from all walks of life. That is very good, and is something that happens every year. But why can’t Jamaicans overseas receive similar awards. Look, if the Jamaican government is serious about building up a strong relationship with Jamaicans living overseas, one ways of building this bridge is to reach out to Jamaicans overseas by honoring them for the work they do to make the Jamaican communities overseas function well. There are many educators, medical people, business people, entertainers and so on who are from Jamaica, who although they live in America, England and Canada make sure that the Jamaican flag is always flying proudly. They should be honored too, |

Only Massa God can solve Middle East conflict Dear Sir: The war going on between Israel and Lebanon is really a sad thing. War, on a whole, is an awful thing, because of all the innocent people killed. What I hate, Mr. Editor, is all this talk about the Bible. Everyday during the week people have been calling the radio talk show talking about the Bible say that there will be wars and rumors of wars. Caribbean people act if they know the Bible so much, we all should be saved everlastingly. I don’t pretend to even to begin to understand the Bible, but through but the book of Psalms which is my favorite part of the Bible, David speaks about the Lord protecting the Israelites, as they were the people unfairly treated by Egypt, an Arab country. So from what I can see it is Israel who will receive redemption every time there is a Middle East crisis for the Bible does say that the Israelites are the Chosen People. |

On being a woman Dear Sir: As a member of the fairer sex, I see it as my duty to remind the public of our importance. Too many injustices and prejudices affect our everyday life for me to be quiescent or my conscience unmoved. Even in the workplace we are always eager to go the extra mile for the prosperity of our companies, but are quickly passed over for salary increase or promotion. From the beginning, the bulk of the decision-making lies on our heads. jost often we make decisions but allow our counterparts to believe they did just to save their faces. Call it psychology, manipulation or simply common sense, we are good at “keeping it together”. We are not miracle workers, but we can perform arduous tasks, I, for a fact in April of this year performed an aljost impossible task when I had a 13 and a half hour labor ‘trauma’ that could only be endured by a woman. |
