It’s
another proud moment for Jamaicans in the Diaspora sending off 23 year-old
Barrington Irving on is ambitious world flight adventure. On Friday March 23, Irving will start his journey that will make
him the youngest aviator to fly solo around the world and the first person of
African descent to make the trek.
Taking off
in Miami, Florida,
Irving will traverse Canada,
the Mediterranean, the Middle East, Asia and the Caribbean, of course making a
stop in his birthplace, Jamaica.
Barrington will
follow in the tradition of mentor Erik Lindbergh, grandson of the great Charles
Lindbergh, and many other great aviators before him.
Born in Kingston, and raised in inner-city Miami,
Irving hopes
this great endeavor will inspire the underprivileged and uninformed youth of
his hometown, and others throughout the nation, to strive for career success in
areas that may have seemed unavailable to them.

We are fast
approaching Easter. Ash Wednesday,
February 21st, officially marked the beginning of Lent. Historically, Lent is a time when Christians
set themselves apart to meditate on the suffering that Jesus undertook on his way
to death on a cross. The season of Lent
and the event of Easter are rife with controversies, however. Just recently in the news we heard the
stirring of one such controversy – Did archaeologists really find the remains
of Jesus in the supposed tomb?

Cs Charlie Crist delivers
first State of the State Address
Florida’s Governor, Charlie Crist delivered
his first State of the State address last week, and in so doing attracted a
rousing applause from Democrats in the Legislature. Reports out of Tallahassee were that a
black legislature commented that Crist sounded more liberal than some liberal
Democrats.
In general,
Crist’s speech reflected what he had already shown in the state’s budget
presented earlier this year. In the speech, he stressed themes that are popular
and high on the agenda of the citizens of Florida. These included reduction in
property tax and home insurance; effective battling of crime, stark improvement
in education, and reformation of the state’s voting machinery; topics always
popular with Democrats.

Castro
speaks of improving health with Chavez
Castro has
announced that news of his pending death is really premature. Well, not exactly
in those words. Despite speculation about the seriousness of his illness,
ranging to terminal cancer to diverticulitis, the Cuban leader, who has been
indisposed since August of last year seem to be recuperating well. In a
recorded telephone call to his colleague, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez’s
radio talk show in Venezuela,
Castro informed his host and the world that he was more energetic and stronger,
felt good and happy, and that the country is running well without him being
currently in charge.
