McDonalds disgruntled with “McJob” dictionary entry

Fast food giant, McDonalds, has expressed outrage at the newest word entry into the Merriam-Webster dictionary. The fast food chain, known for using ‘Mac’ to precede items on the menu, now has to contend with the unflattering word “McJob (mek jäb') which is a noun for “a low-paying job that requires little skill and provides little opportunity for advancement”

According to the Associated Press, “McDonald's says it deserves a break from the unflattering way the latest Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary depicts its job opportunities.”

It’s another proud moment for Jamaicans in the Diaspora sending off 23 year-old Barrington Irving on is ambitious world flight adventure. On Friday March 23, Irving will start his journey that will make him the youngest aviator to fly solo around the world and the first person of African descent to make the trek.

Taking off in Miami, Florida, Irving will traverse Canada, the Mediterranean, the Middle East, Asia and the Caribbean, of course making a stop in his birthplace, Jamaica. Barrington will follow in the tradition of mentor Erik Lindbergh, grandson of the great Charles Lindbergh, and many other great aviators before him.

Born in Kingston, and raised in inner-city Miami, Irving hopes this great endeavor will inspire the underprivileged and uninformed youth of his hometown, and others throughout the nation, to strive for career success in areas that may have seemed unavailable to them.

We are fast approaching Easter. Ash Wednesday, February 21st, officially marked the beginning of Lent. Historically, Lent is a time when Christians set themselves apart to meditate on the suffering that Jesus undertook on his way to death on a cross. The season of Lent and the event of Easter are rife with controversies, however. Just recently in the news we heard the stirring of one such controversy – Did archaeologists really find the remains of Jesus in the supposed tomb?

Cs Charlie Crist delivers first State of the State Address

Florida’s Governor, Charlie Crist delivered his first State of the State address last week, and in so doing attracted a rousing applause from Democrats in the Legislature. Reports out of Tallahassee were that a black legislature commented that Crist sounded more liberal than some liberal Democrats.

In general, Crist’s speech reflected what he had already shown in the state’s budget presented earlier this year. In the speech, he stressed themes that are popular and high on the agenda of the citizens of Florida. These included reduction in property tax and home insurance; effective battling of crime, stark improvement in education, and reformation of the state’s voting machinery; topics always popular with Democrats.

Castro speaks of improving health with Chavez

Castro has announced that news of his pending death is really premature. Well, not exactly in those words. Despite speculation about the seriousness of his illness, ranging to terminal cancer to diverticulitis, the Cuban leader, who has been indisposed since August of last year seem to be recuperating well. In a recorded telephone call to his colleague, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez’s radio talk show in Venezuela, Castro informed his host and the world that he was more energetic and stronger, felt good and happy, and that the country is running well without him being currently in charge.
