On Monday Miami-Dade Commissioners Barbara J. Jordan, Audrey M.
Edmonson, and Dennis C. Moss returned from a one day trip to Haiti
where they helped to feed people from one of the country’s impoverished
communities. They were accompanied on the trip by Angel Aloma,
Executive Director of Food For The Poor, one of the largest
international aid agencies in the U.S. and a world leader in helping
the poor, who were recipients of nearly 20 tons of food collected in
Miami-Dade County to distribute to the poor and in Haiti.
Commissioner
Jordan, cognizant of reports that food sent to Haiti to assist with the
scarcity and high costs of food, was held up for months in Haitian’s
warehouses, authored legislation for organizing the food drive and
promised to see that the donated goods went to the families who needed
it most.

School Superintendent gets to keep job |
|
|
|
|
Sunday, 10 August 2008 |
Miami-Dade School Superintendent Rudy Crew, after a close vote by the school board, will keep his job.
The decision came after an intense four-hour discussion between board
members for and against the continuation of Crew’s employment. Crew
retained his job by a narrow 5 to 4 vote.
It was only last week that the Miami-Dade School Board approved a
temporary budget after months of haggling, and it seemed that some
semblance of stability had come over the often factious board.

Bailout may soon come for homeowners |

Saturday, 02 August 2008 |

Homeowners can start breathing a sigh of relief as reprieve may soon
hit home. The U.S. Congress approved a bill that will bring relief to
thousands of homeowners, including South Floridians, who are struggling
with their mortgage payments and are in serious danger of joining the
growing lists of homeowners who have already been forced to foreclose.
The
measure, said to be the largest such housing rescue bill since the
Great Depression of the 1930’s, provides some $300 billion that allow
for homeowners who cannot meet their mortgage payments to refinance
into more affordable government guaranteed loans, to save their homes.

Miami-Dade schools budget passes |
|
|
|
|
Saturday, 02 August 2008 |
|
The Miami-Dade School Board finally approved the district’s $5.5
million, by a 5-4 vote following a six hour meeting from Wednesday
evening to early Thursday morning. The approval came after weeks of
hostile meetings.
The new budget has been described by the
school board as a tentative budget, which could appease Miami-Dade
teachers who did not have their promised $72 million raise included
this time around. The board’s Chairman Agustin Barrera said after the
meeting that the approval of the budget approved was just the first
step. He said the final budget hearing is still pending, and there are
still issues to attend to.

Broward schools anti-bulling policy |
|
|
|
|
Saturday, 02 August 2008 |
In response to a Florida’s Legislature measure passed earlier this
year, the Broward School Board has adopted an anti-bullying policy. The
measure required school districts in the state to introduce
anti-bullying policies at Florida public schools by this December. The
Broward School District is the first Florida school district to put in
place such a policy.
Bullying of students by other students has been a problem in Florida
schools for years, and has on several occasions resulted in bodily harm
to students. Some years ago a student at a Cooper City high school was
killed by his peers in a bullying incident, in a high profile case
which resulted in the making of the movie, “Bully”.
