Yvonne
Garth emerged the winner of the coveted Miramar City Commission seat in very
low polling elections held in Broward
County on Tuesday. Only a
disappointing 10 percent of the electorate cast ballots in the various cities.
In the Miramar
race four candidates campaigned for the seat made vacant by the earlier
resignation of former Commissioner Marjorie Conlan.
Garth, 37,
who was running in any type of political race for the first time, secured 45.1
percent of the 1,948 votes cast by Miramar
voters. In doing so, she defeated Alejandro “Alex” Casas who gained 19.5
percent of the votes, former commissioner, George Pedlar, who is suffering his
third consecutive loss in his bid to regain a seat on the Commission, 19.4
percent, and Sallie Stephens, another former commissioner, who polled 16
percent of the votes.

A Discovery Channel
documentary that has inflamed the passions of Christians everywhere has a South Florida connection.
"The Lost Tomb of
Christ," which will air on Sunday, argues that 10 ancient ossuaries --
small caskets used to store bones -- discovered in a suburb of Jerusalem in 1980 may have contained the
bones of Jesus and his family.
The documentary cites an
ancient relic that is now on display at the Museum
of Art in Fort Lauderdale.

City
commissioners from Pembroke Pines
approved a measure Wednesday to toughen their anti-predator law in the city.
Officials
said anyone convicted of a sexual offense anywhere in the nation won't be able
to live in Pembroke Pines
because city officials adopted a change to toughen their anti-predator law.
Those
who have already been convicted as a sexual offender and already live within
the city limits will not be forced to leave the city, but the law takes effect
immediately and is not retroactive, officials said.
