EPA TRADE AGREEMENT: To sign or not to sign? |
|

Monday, 01 September 2008 |
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, – At the end of December last year, none of
the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries, with the exception of
Guyana, had envisaged problems in signing the Economic Partnership
Agreement (EPA) that had been negotiated with the European Union.
The regional leaders had strongly defended the accord that had been
negotiated by the Barbados-based Caribbean Regional Negotiating
Machinery (CRNM) on behalf of CARIFORUM which comprises the 15-member
CARICOM grouping and the Dominican Republic.
In fact, the leaders were quick to adopt the phrase made popular by the
late Dominica prime minister Dame Eugenia Charles, that "bad elections
are better than no election at all", with regards to the political
situation in Haiti, by indicating that although there were concerns
about the EPA, it was better than nothing.

PORT OF SPAIN – An opposition call for a referendum on regional
integration here has been dismissed by Prime Minister Patrick Manning.
The Basdeo Panday-led United National Congress Alliance (UNC-A) made
the call last week following news that Trinidad had signed a
declaration with a number of Eastern Caribbean states to establish an
economic and political union.
"The PNM (People’s National Movement) has never subscribed to referenda
and that is unlikely to change, very unlikely," Manning told media. "I
could tell you everybody is on board, the OECS (Organization of Eastern
Caribbean States) countries...we are trying to avoid misconceptions
stepping in all of this."

Call for end to construction near Pitons |

Monday, 01 September 2008 |
CASTRIRES – The St. Lucia government is being urged to stop the
construction of houses, by an Italian businessman, on an area situated
between the island's world famous Piton Mountains.
The St. Lucia National Trust and the St. Lucia Archaeological and
Historical Society have expressed "deep concern" over the project being
undertaken on private property, noting that in 2004 the Pitons area was
declared a World Heritage Site.
"The property which is relatively steep sloping has been stripped of
nearly all vegetation. It is also north of a small watercourse near to
which important Amerindian artifacts have been discovered. No soil
conservation measures such as silt traps or drains appear to have been
utilized," they said in a joint statement.

In a nationwide radio and television broadcast on Sunday, Golding urged
all Jamaicans to come together and take advantage of the successes of
the athletes who won six gold, three silver and three bronze medals,
placing Jamaica 13th in the overall medal standings.
"You gunman, you rapist, you badman - you are spoiling the show. Get
with the program. We are the best in the world! Stop trying to make us
