Wednesday, 07 February 2007
The nearly two-year-old Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) has received a passing grade from a top law professor at the Cave Hill campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI).

Professor Albert Fiadjoe, who authored a paper on the Trinidad-based court, Monday told the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) the four major decisions which the CCJ delivered as the final appeal court for Barbados and Guyana went a great way towards establishing it as a sound institution.

"The quality of output has been very good. There've been very well-researched decisions, very well put together and most of all the court is not afraid to tackle some very controversial areas of law," he said.

Former telecom executive wants investigation of C&W PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 07 February 2007
A former senior executive of Cable and Wireless has accused the British-based telecommunication giant of practicing discrimination and corporate bullying against Caribbean nationals.

Rudy Gurley, who served as Vice President of Strategy and Business Development and Chairman of the Board of Directors of C&W Grenada, has since written the London-based British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) urging an investigation of the allegation.

“I have followed with interest the public uproar in the UK over Jade Goody’s alleged racist attacks on Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty in a recent episode of ‘Celebrity Big Brother’. The over 36,000 complaints from the British public, the fact that viewers voted out Ms. Goody, the sentiments expressed recently on the BBC’s ‘Have Your Say’, the statements by Gordon Brown, Tony Blair and others prove that Britain is indeed a society that opposes discrimination and bullying “in all its forms.”

GUYANA: Veteran Guyanese journalist dies PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 07 February 2007
GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC - Veteran Guyanese journalist Cecil Griffith died Monday after a brief illness. He was in his late 70’s.

"When a number of his colleagues saw him in hospital, he was obviously ill but mentally alert and filled with his usual humour so we are obviously somewhat shocked at his passing," the Guyana Press Association (GPA) said in a statement.

Griffith died at the St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital, in the capital, "where he was hospitalised for several days," the GPA said.

The GPA said that Griffith, a recipient of the Arrow of Achievement (AA), one of Guyana's National Awards, and a former GPA president "will long be remembered for his sterling contribution to print and broadcast journalism”.

“His formal and informal roles in promoting the importance of training as well as imparting knowledge and experiences to young media workers will continue to be cherished by those he interfaced with,” the GPA said.

General Secretary of the Association of Caribbean MediaWorkers (ACM) Wesley Gibbings described the death of Griffith as a “great loss to Guyana and Caribbean media” adding he was one “of the greats who never abandoned journalism and who had so much to offer even in the last days and years”.

Wednesday, 07 February 2007
Suriname is among 10 finalists worldwide, named by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) for one of five Supporting Entrepreneurs for Environment and Development (SEED) Awards.

UNDEP executive director, Achim Steiner said the winners of the Seed Awards would be announced at the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development in New York in May.

"The Seed initiative is again offering inspiring examples of local level entrepreneurs in all parts of the world who are setting up new partnerships and using 'global/local' networks to address sustainable development challenges with a business case approach,” he said.

SEED is an incentive scheme for local entrepreneurs to promote economic growth, social development and environmental protection.

Suriname’s presentation is made under the theme, “Protecting the Future by Preserving the Past.”

UNEP said it seeks to improve livelihoods and “provides health services by using traditional knowledge of plant extracts for therapeutic purposes”.

Besides Suriname, other countries named as finalists for the Seed Awards are Brazil, Ecuador, India, Nepal, Kenya, Peru, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, and Vietnam.

The UN said the 2007 finalists were announced after a “rigorous” 10-month selection process that drew together more than 230 applications from more than 70 countries worldwide.

Canada will be assisting six Eastern Caribbean countries to boost security in advance of Cricket World Cup, which bowls off in the region next month, a senior Canadian diplomat in the Caribbean has said.

According to the officials, Canada would provide narcotics and explosives trace detection technology to Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, Guyana, St. Kitts - Nevis, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines which will be hosting games during March 5 to April 28 tournament.

“Canada has a lot of experience in border management, and I am pleased that we are able to share our expertise with CARICOM.

"We believe that our contribution of scanners and training in their use will help contribute to making the Cricket World Cup a secure and successful event,” said Michael Welsh, High Commissioner of Canada to Barbados and the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States.

The High Commissioner said the equipment will be deployed to high risk and high volume ports of entry over a six-week period.

Welch said beginning this month, the government of Canada, through the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), will also be providing ion-mobility spectrometry (IMS) technology, and related training to Customs officials in the eastern Caribbean countries.
