Crossing party lines, a top Republican moderate Tuesday threw his support behind presidential candidate Barack Obama, assisting the Illinois Senator as he attempts to win support from both major parties.

Former Rep. Jim Leach of Iowa, known for his foreign policy background, was among a group of Conservatives who crossed party lines to support Obama. According to the Obama camp, he also gained the backing of Republican mayor of Fairbanks, Alaska, Jim Whitaker.

United States legislators have called for greater scrutiny of Caribbean and other offshore tax havens after a report claimed that a building in the Cayman Islands housed more than 18,000 offshore firms.

''We're going to find a way to make a huge dent in this problem,'' said Senator Max Baucus, the Democratic chairman of the Senate Finance Committee.

Despite Reverend Jesse Jackson’s off-mike negative comments about Barack Obama that caught the nation’s attention recently, Blacks seem to be in agreement with Obama that they need to take personal responsibility for their lives.

The sentiment was clear when Obama addressed the NAACP annual convention in Cincinnati on Monday, to rousing applause. Obama told the gathering that if Blacks were serious about reclaiming the dream, “we have to do more in our own lives, our own families and our own communities.”  He, however, also stated that while Washington must provide greater education and economic assistance for Blacks, they must also demand more of themselves.

Floridians will have a chance to make some changes in the state, or opt to keep things the way they are come November when they cast their ballots. Voters will get to decide whether to further ban gay marriage in the state, swap property taxes with sales tax to foot the bill for public schools or to allow a hurricane tax break. These are among nine issues that will be on the Florida ballot.

Tallahassee’s 25-member Taxation and Budget Reform Commission added another seven to the two previously proposed amendments to the Florida Constitution to be on the November 4 ballot. They need approval by 60 percent of the voters to pass.

A Jamaica-born woman died on an emergency room floor of a New York City hospital recently while staff walked by for more than an hour later without attending to her, surveillance footage released Tuesday showed.

The incident, which happened two weeks ago on the psychiatric ward at the sprawling Kings Country Hospital (KCH) in Brooklyn, has now led to hospital officials agreeing in court to implement changes at the facility.

The New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC), which oversees the hospital, said Tuesday that it had fired six employees, including security personnel and members of the medical staff, as a result of the death of Esmin Green, 49.
