Blacks agree with Obama’s message |
|
|
|
|
Thursday, 17 July 2008 |
Despite Reverend Jesse Jackson’s off-mike negative comments about
Barack Obama that caught the nation’s attention recently, Blacks seem
to be in agreement with Obama that they need to take personal
responsibility for their lives.
The sentiment was clear when Obama addressed the NAACP annual
convention in Cincinnati on Monday, to rousing applause. Obama told the
gathering that if Blacks were serious about reclaiming the dream, “we
have to do more in our own lives, our own families and our own
communities.” He, however, also stated that while Washington must
provide greater education and economic assistance for Blacks, they must
also demand more of themselves.

|
|
|
|
Thursday, 17 July 2008 |
Floridians will have a chance to make some changes in the state, or opt
to keep things the way they are come November when they cast their
ballots. Voters will get to decide whether to further ban gay marriage
in the state, swap property taxes with sales tax to foot the bill for
public schools or to allow a hurricane tax break. These are among nine
issues that will be on the Florida ballot.
Tallahassee’s 25-member Taxation and Budget Reform Commission added
another seven to the two previously proposed amendments to the Florida
Constitution to be on the November 4 ballot. They need approval by 60
percent of the voters to pass.

Jamaican patient dies on hospital floor |
|
|
|
|
Saturday, 05 July 2008 |
A Jamaica-born woman died on an emergency room floor of a New York City
hospital recently while staff walked by for more than an hour later
without attending to her, surveillance footage released Tuesday showed.
The incident, which happened two weeks ago on the psychiatric ward at
the sprawling Kings Country Hospital (KCH) in Brooklyn, has now led to
hospital officials agreeing in court to implement changes at the
facility.
The New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC), which
oversees the hospital, said Tuesday that it had fired six employees,
including security personnel and members of the medical staff, as a
result of the death of Esmin Green, 49.
