'No Match, No Vote' PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 21 September 2008
With an October 6 deadline to register to vote in the November 4 General Elections, Florida’s enforcement of the ‘No Match, No Vote’ law which began this month could have serious repercussions, especially for minority groups.

The verification law or ‘No Match, No Vote’, enforced on September 8, stipulates that Floridians identifications have to match up with state or federal databases to be able to register to vote. What this means is that names, social security numbers, license numbers and other such information must be a perfect match for persons to register.

U.S. death toll from Ike rises PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 21 September 2008
Six more deaths are being blamed on Hurricane Ike in the Houston area, bringing the number of people killed in Texas to 17, and the death toll in those states affected by the storm to 48 in the United States, authorities said Tuesday. The remnants of the storm killed dozens more as it moved across the country, after hitting Texas last weekend.

Many of the deaths in Texas have happened in the days after the storm because of falling trees or carbon monoxide poisoning caused by improper generator use. Others have come from fires caused by candles in powerless homes.

Before impacting the U.S. the storm killed some 400 people in the Caribbean, including Haiti and Cuba.

All about McCain PDF Print E-mail

mccain.jpgIf you were looking to know about Sen. John McCain and his admirable service to his country, Thursday night’s speech was the perfect opportunity. The republican presidential nominee went to great lengths to engrave his war credentials and service to the country on people’s hearts, as he played on his new theme, ‘Country First’.

Prefacing and ending his speech with his prisoner of war story in Hanoi, a theme on which the Republican nominee rests much of his presidential bid, McCain took the audience through his grueling experience of torture as a POW and said he discovered his intense love for country during that time.

In between the rhetoric, McCain attempted to wrestle away Sen. Barack Obama’s theme of change, presenting himself as the candidate of change. He went through a litany of things he will do, starting with shaking up Washington, moving towards energy independence and reforming the education and healthcare systems.

Now is the time to move forward PDF Print E-mail

1__obama.jpgFor forty-two minutes on Thursday night Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama gave an acceptance speech, the kind of which is hardly ever seen or heard in this or any country. For forty- two minutes Barack Obama held 80 thousand people in a football field in Denver Colorado spell bound with his profound words. For forty-two minutes he clearly described how he is going to change America and restore the American dream. When he ended his speech, the usual television talking heads were at a loss for words.

Keith Olbermann of MSNBC said, “How can I find anything to criticize?” Chris Matthews said, “I’ve been criticized for saying he inspires me… to hell with my critics.” One of CNN’s commentators said he adequately rebuffed every criticism thrown at him by his Republican opponents. Yes he did! Yes he did!

HIV/AIDS orgs demand national plans PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 01 September 2008
In a historically unprecedented move, over 30 national HIV/AIDS organizations and leaders representing African-American, Latino, Native American/Alaska Native, and Asian & Pacific Islander communities have joined forces in an urgent call for the development and implementation of a comprehensive national AIDS strategy.

The demands to the Democratic and Republican presidential nominees come in response to long standing concerns about unmet needs for targeted HIV research, treatment access, medical care and prevention in communities of color. A recently-released report from the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on estimates of new HIV infections in the United States amplifies the crises faced in communities of color.
