While President-elect Barack Obama vacations in Hawaii with his family, his top advisors are working on a well needed stimulus plan that Obama wants to sign as soon as he takes office in January.

The plan, it is being reported could total between $675 to $775 billion dollars to be pumped into the U.S. economy which has been seeing a rapid decline evidenced by job losses and a decrease in spending.

Besides providing funding for public works projects like road and bridge construction and repairs, and mass-transit projects, the plan is expected to provide tax relief of some $150 billion for low and middle income workers. Obama is expected to receive a draft of the stimulus plan on his return from his vacation on January 2.

Will Illinois Governor’s arrest affect Obama? PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 14 December 2008
1__governor-rod-full.jpgIllinois politicians, especially in Chicago, have long had the reputation of swimming in murky political waters and Tuesday’s arrest of Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich seems to confirm just that.

The 52-year-old governor, who had been wiretapped, was arrested by the FBI early Tuesday morning for allegedly trying to sell president-elect Barack Obama’s recently vacated senate seat.  Though incidental, there is already an Obama link. The question is: Will this affect the president-elect?

In a statement at a press conference on Tuesday Obama said, "Obviously, like the rest of the people of Illinois, I am saddened and sobered by the news that came out of the U.S. attorney's office today. But as this is an ongoing investigation ….. I don't think it would be appropriate for me to comment… at this time."

US Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald also said that there is no evidence of any association between Obama and the governor in this matter; yet, it appears that the Republican National Party is trying to make a political issue of the situation.

The nation’s governors have joined the line of entities – banks, automobile companies, insurance companies, etc. – that are seeking financial help from the government.

At a meeting with President-elect Barack Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden on Tuesday, the National Governors Association indicated that the nation’s governors need some $136 billion to fund "ready-to-go projects," like water and sewer projects and building roads and bridges. In addition they want another $40 billion to go toward Medicaid programs.

Most states across the country have been experiencing rising unemployment, declining tax revenue, increased demand for state services, and serious budget shortfalls.

Obama and Biden told the governors that the federal government needs to build a deeper relationship with them in order to put America on the path to long-term prosperity.
