human resource counselors PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 30 September 2006

In the modern workplace, the role of the human resources department has increased tremendously. This is driven by the trend among managers to refer jost of the people issues to HR, which they conceive as the department to deal with the people problems of the organization. We disagree with this, as, in our opinion, it is the responsibility of every manager to be concerned with the overall development of his employees, including those factors that contribute to, or hinder, their professional development. There are few managers whose responsibilities do not involve the management of people. Therefore, every manager is required to provide leadership to the people he manages. In leading his employees the manager should get to know them, be able to motivate and aid them in their overall development. For the manager to succeed as a good “people manager” then that manager cannot pass the responsibility for the employees’ development entirely over to the human resource department.

The services provided by the human resources department should not compromise the role played by a manager in the development and motivation of his employees into being optimum producers. A manager should simply not extract a low performer from that manager’s work team, and shift all responsibility for that employee’s development to the HR department. Rather, that department must be utilized as a supporting corollary to the efforts and responsibilities of the manager, especially in matters of emotional intelligence.

FINANCIAL PLANNING PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 24 September 2006

Thanksgiving and Christmas are just around the corner and many consumers will be giving special gifts to friends and loved ones as customary. Many started their holiday shopping during the after Christmas sales last year. However, this may be a good time for those of us who have not started to start budgeting by deciding where the funds for buying will come from.

It is very easy to get caught up in the excitement of the season, and often we over extend ourselves financially, which comes back to haunt us after the holidays. Budgeting and sticking within the guidelines of our budgets is a good way to avoid the depression that follows the festive season.

First. Consider your income and monthly expenses for the comfort and peace of mind of the family before you start your shopping. This means let your monthly obligations be priority. Often, we get into the shopping frenzy and spend monies, which should be used for living expenses to pay for gifts. Never jeopardize the well-being of your family during the holiday season by spending funds earmarked for managing your home.

Second. Decide who will be on your gift list this year. Consider charitable giving, in addition to family and friends. This is good not only for the charity, but also for your tax planning next year.

Advertising and media channels are ever changing.  This makes finding the right advertising mix a moving target. All the while, many businesses still rely on their sales teams, gatekeepers and receptionists to track where their leads are coming from -- not the best way to accurately measure advertising response in an increasingly complex advertising environment.

To effectively track response rates your advertising needs to include a response-measuring tool.  There are several out there, and some are easier to implement than others.

Here are five tricks to easily ensure that you will be able to track your ad response, and hone your marketing efforts to generate more leads and sales.

1.        Include a Timely Offer and Strong Call to Action

Give people a reason to call you and get them to act fast!  Include an offer that will make prospects and customers call you right away.  Put a deadline on a current promotion, or tell them what they will get right now from your service.  For example: “Call 1-800-NEW-FLOOR to receive $100 off your first order.

Writing effective e-mails PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 29 August 2006

One of the jost commonly used means of business (and personal) communication today is electronic mail, popularly referred to as e-mail. E-mail has made it so much easier and speedier for business people to communicate. This form of communication is so convenient that we often wonder how could we have survived without it. However, while e-mails are a very convenient means of communicating, there are too many business people that are not using this means of communication effectively, and in fact, because of this, e-mails can create negative results if we are not careful.

Here are a few tips to ensure that we get the best results by communication by e-mail:

There is an unfortunate perception, by many people, that writing e-mails do not require the formality or the accuracy that one utilizes in writing regular hard-copy letters. This perception must be cast aside immediately. We assume this fallacy was initiated and perpetuated by the ease and convenience involved in writing and sending e-mails, compared to writing a hard copy letter.

Writing is similar to speech. If we do not practice to speak well, using proper words, pronunciations, etc. we will find it difficult to speak properly, when required.
