Oil prices rise over Iran threat PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 30 December 2011 10:38

Gas pricesIran, on Tuesday, took a stance, which if perpetuated, has serious implications for oil prices in 2012. In response to the West, led by the United States, imposing sanctions against Iran including limiting the amount of oil the Middle Eastern country can export, Iran has threatened to cut off the movement of Arabian oil through its Hormuz Strait.

Iran's first Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi was reported as saying that if Iran oil export is banned "not a single drop of oil will pass through Hormuz Strait." As a result of Iran's threat, oil prices jumped by two percent on Tuesday to over a $100 per barrel.

According to reports, over 15 million barrels of oil a day passed through the strait in 2009, about a sixth of the world's total oil production and a third of all oil traded worldwide. Most of the oil passing through the strait goes to Asia, not the U.S., but because oil is a globally traded commodity, a shortage in Asia would still affect the global price of oil. Indicative of the seriousness of Iran's threat, are reports that that country's navy is policing the Hormuz Strait.

Newt Gingrich_and_Ron_PaulGingrich's lead fading; Ron Paul rises in polls

The amazing see-saw Republican presidential campaign keeps on being unpredictable, making it hard to tell which of the remaining six candidates will be nominated to contest next year's presidential election against incumbent President Barack Obama.

Almost every month a different candidate is touted as the frontrunner. Mitt Romney, Rick Perry, (former candidate) Herman Cain, and recently Newt Gingrich have all enjoyed their moment at the top.

Two weeks ago Gingrich not only soared as the latest candidate of the month but, according to some states, including Florida, and national polls, seemed poised to be the Republican nominee. However, since last week's Republican debate in Sioux City, and with the Iowa caucus two weeks away, Gingrich's luster is fading, and now Ron Paul is shaping to take the lead in the polls.

Deal…or no deal PDF Print E-mail

boehner-payroll-tax-cut19decLate Saturday evening when the U.S. Senate overwhelmingly voted 80-10 to extend the federal payroll tax and unemployment benefits by two months, there was a sigh of relief. Two months was not the ideal outcome anticipated, but it was expected with Senators eager to commence their annual Christmas break and get out of Washington D.C.

The temporary approval meant that for the next two months, at least, taxpayers would not have to pay more on Social Security and Medicare taxes, and the unemployed would still get unemployment benefits. President Barack Obama, commenting after the two-month extension was approved, said it would only be a matter of formality for the measures to be extended further after the two-month period ends in February.

But those, including President Obama and the 80 senators who voted for the temporary measure, took House Republicans, mainly the Tea Party conservatives, for granted.

obama-reid-payroll-tax-cutHouse approves payroll tax cut extension, but...

The approval of the payroll tax cut extension seems encouraging for some 160 million Americans, including a large percentage of Floridians. Extending the existing payroll tax cuts (Social Security and Medicare deductions) also means continuing to take home an average additional $1,000 annually. That's no peanuts in difficult economic times.

However, there's the "but." The bill remains at a standstill since Democrats refuse conditions congressional Republicans have included, such as tying approval of the Keystone XL oil pipeline to the payroll-tax extension. They argue that the construction of the pipeline from Alberta, Canada to the U.S. will create thousands of jobs, and substantially increase domestic oil supply. If the bill isn't approved before the Congress goes on recess, the payroll taxes of millions of Americans will increase, effective January 1, 2012.
