If one were to go by reports from the mainstream U.S. media, one would get the impression that the Summit of the Americas that concluded last Sunday in Trinidad and Tobago was all about Cuba and Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez. Before the Summit opened on April 17, the U.S. media began analyzing and re-analyzing President Barack Obama’s announcement to ease controls on Cuban-Americans travel and monetary remittances to Cuba. This analysis intensified when Raul Castro responded to Obama’s initiatives saying that the Cuban government is willing to have talks with the U.S. government to discuss “everything” standing in the way of better relationships between the two countries.
