Need greater diseases prevention programs PDF Print E-mail
The H1N1 virus (Swine Flu) that is spreading across the globe is a cause for great concern, not directly related to the virus, but as it pertains to the low quality of healthcare, generally.

There is an unfortunate tendency (in some cases a policy), especially in developing countries to use healthcare as an intervention measure, rather than for disease prevention. This was evident last week as several individuals, including the president of the United States, appealed to people to take basic precautions like washing hands and covering up mouth and nostrils when one coughs or sneezes, and avoid crowded places if one has flu symptoms. This appeal was also sent out across the globe by representatives of the World Health Organization.

Now, it could be taken for granted that most people, even if their education is limited to the elementary level, were taught to practice basic hygiene including the frequent washing of hands and to cover-up when coughing or sneezing. However, gone are the days of the 1950s and 60s when basic hygiene was a mandatory subject taught in schools.
